India - Humanitarian crisis in the midst of economic boom

Fifty years since independence, India is still grappling to provide the basic necessities Viz Food, Clothing and Shelter to all its countrymen, though under every five year plans and budget sessions, there are enough programs planned and funds allocated. It is a sad story that even after the implementation of beneficiary programs, it hardly ever reaches the needy. Everyday, in newspapers and news channels we come across reports of pre-mature death, especially children, in remote villages due to poverty and food shortages. One such startling example is Vidharbha, which was extensively covered by many news agencies. There are many more villages like that. Even after the recent waiver of farmer loans, many of them are not able to recover.

Until the government recognizes that agriculture is as important to a growing economy as the other areas namely, science, IT, Defense, etc; the country is bound to feel the crisis, as most of the villages in India have agriculture as their main occupation.
The other factor that the government should take care about is illiteracy, for illiteracy is like a chain reaction leading to other social evils like poverty and in turn to malnutrition. It also has to take care that whether the programs it launches reach the people or not, for before it actually reaches, there are so many malpractices and the funds get diverted, and as a result, poor people starve to death.

Many NGO’s have done several appreciable works, but unless the government wakes up, the situation would be grave in spite of economic boom (visible only in urban areas).

The big answer to money not reaching the needy is CORRUPTION. Our admirable netas are busy fattening their own bank accounts, irrespective the plight of the poor.

Everyone understands that the basic amenities of living are not being met up with but that understanding is talked about only during the pre-election phase .Once those democratically elected goons get what they wish for, that understanding vanishes till the next pre-election phase.

Who doesn’t know that 2/3 of this country’s population is dependent on agriculture and the global warming is ruining our farmers to a level where they jump into a river and commit suicide. Our Democracy is blindfolded and we have no one to blame but ourselves for we are the only ones who elect them.

Vidharba is so badly affected simply because the vast majority of farmers there, were denied loans by the public sector banks. So, they headed to the moneylenders who harrassed them even as crops withered away. A spate of suicides and now the entire region faces a humanitarian crisis. The Indian government does act, but only after significant damage is done. Till the moneylender mafia is eliminated in the villages and Institutionalised lending is made the norm, the future looks very bleak for the millions of impoverished Indian farmers.

India should drop the idea of becoming a global power if it don't take care of the farming community. As I know a larger part of workforce is involved in agriculture sector and the sector is showing negative growth, farmers are committing suicides. It means, the government is just playing with fake data in the ministries.

I have read on a Instablogs article that more than one lakh farmers committed suicide in past 10 years in India. The article showed a data released by the government itself, I just want to ask the Indian PM Manmohan Singh, Do you sleep well?

I have seen on Indian news channels that India is facing serious problem of inflation rise, the prices of essential commodities are touching sky in markets, specially in cities like Delhi and Mumbai, What else can you expect from a country, which neglected agriculture and farmers' suicide in past one decade. An advice to Indians - Eat software, drink software and sleep software because this is what you have done in past ten years - Software exports.
